Authenticity

Authenticity in relationships

20 January 2026

Authenticity is often confused with impulse. As if honesty meant saying everything, immediately, regardless of the other person. That is not presence. That is unloading.

In a relationship, authenticity is quieter. It is knowing what you feel and being allowed to have it — even if you do not yet have the perfect sentence. Not having to perform ease. Being able to say “I’m not sure” and stay in contact.

Many people learned to be loved through a role: useful, calm, entertaining, strong. The role works, until it starts to cost. Then the question arrives: if I show who I am, will I still be stayed with?

Therapy does not ask you to become loud. It asks you to come back to yourself enough that the relationship no longer depends on your disappearing.
