Burnout
Burnout is not laziness
2 March 2026
Burnout often disguises itself as conscience. One more email. One more “I can take that on.” One more postponement of rest until it has been earned. Then the body stops — insomnia, emptiness, irritation, a sense that nothing means anything anymore.
That is not character. It is a signal that you have been in endurance mode for a long time. Especially in cultures where worth is measured by stamina, people learn to ignore tiredness until tiredness becomes an identity.
In therapy we do not chase a quick return to productivity. We ask: whose pace is this? What happens if you stop? Whom would you disappoint? What remains of you when you are not useful?
Rest is not a prize at the end. How you relate to yourself is part of the work — a return to yourself, not a diagnosis.
